Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take for my name to be added?
Updates are subject to the schedule of the Keepers, so the wait period may vary. During slower periods, you may get a response within the next day or two. During busier periods, it could potentially take longer. We ask that you remain patient as we look through every submission.
Can I change my nickname?
Absolutely. Just resubmit your nickname request.
How come my real name was added rather than my nickname?
Our Welcome page includes very clear instructions on how to submit a nickname request, and deviating from it will only lead to confusion. The only names that should be in your submission are a) your Pottermore username, b) your desired nickname, and c) alternate nicknames should your first choice be rejected. If you were added under your real name, that's probably because it's the first name you listed in your submission.
What is the ** by my name?
When you initially submitted your name on the original Facebook list, you didn't give us your complete Pottermore Username. Therefore ** was placed as a spot holder for when we could add the relevant information. Besides those that have been grandfathered in, we no longer accept incomplete Pottermore Usernames.
Can you pick a good nickname for me?
The Keepers of Gryff Names record nicknames rather than assign them. While a Keeper may decide to offer tips on an individual basis, it is up to you to make the final decision.
If you need a little inspiration, it's rather convenient that you come to us because- Oh look! We have a list of nicknames to serve as examples. Many of the submissions we have received are based on characters from the Harry Potter series, like Crookshanks; others use plays on their name, diminutives, or shortened versions, like "Bolt" for StoneFirebolt; some like to name themselves after Harry Potter related subjects or objects, like Charms; others yet like to construct names that could easily belong to the family tree of a Wizarding family, like Fae Runewild. That being said, we encourage you to be creative with your nicknames to mitigate potential duplication.
Will I be able to use my nickname now without the moderators taking my messages in the Common Room/Great Hall?
In order to protect their users from inappropriate content, Pottermore will not only "moderate" comments with flagged words (i.e., swears) but words that are not recognized in their lexicon. Words such as "today" or "wingardium leviosa" may pass, but other everyday words may not. Therefore, we have no control over how Pottermore moderates their comments. If you're concerned about finding a name that will pass, then we suggest testing them until one does. This listing is mainly for the use of your friends. You submit your name here for all and sundry to see, they find your name on our Gryff Names list, and change your nickname in Pottermore accordingly.
See here, MistRune11 now goes by "Red" in my Friends section.
Now whenever I see MistRune11's activity or comments in Pottermore, it shows up under "Red". (Even if their name was "GargleBlaster," it would show up as long as they didn't include their name in the comment.)
And if I come across them on another Pottermore related site, they'll more often than not go by "Red", which allows me to recognize them.
Due to the fact that we have no say in how comments are moderated, many either go by their given Pottermore name or find a compromise. "Fae" is not recognized by Pottermore's lexicon, so I'll type it out as "F a e".
How come I can't use more than 15 characters?
Pottermore gives an allotment of 15 characters for your Friends' nicknames. We'd like to point out that - like Twitter - spaces are included in this allotment.
Why can't I use symbols in my name?
Simply put, it's confusing. The $ in "Harry$" is an added flourish, not a nickname. You wouldn't call your friend "Harry Dollar Sign" if they signed their name with $ at the end, right? Since it's only natural for people to drop the extra flourishes in conversation, what would that mean for the person who goes by "Harry"? It gets especially confusing when people use emoticons because it's not immediately apparent that it is part of the name.
For the sake of constructing a fair system, we've excluded what could be considered a loophole around repeated names. However, after much deliberation, we've decided to accept numbers. We expect way too many people to be joining Pottermore in the future to avoid repeats, and so you're expected to honor The List's system by always making use of those numbers. How else would we differentiate between Henry and Henry VIII?
I'd also like to point out we *do* recognize a different in names such as "Harry Potter" versus "HarryPotter." Though it is a frowned upon loophole, the Keepers understand the effect a space can have on a name. While "Heron" and "Hero N" may be similar in appearance, one is a bird while the other is a name and initial. That being said, we do not accept consecutive multiple spaces.
Accepted: Harry Potter (one space)
Not accepted: Harry Potter (two spaces)
Why can't two people share a nickname?
Simply put, Pottermore doesn't allow two or more people to have the same name in your Friends list. Considering that some nicknames already include numbers and some utilize the full allotment of spaces available, it isn't a conceivable practice to add upon given nicknames in order to differentiate two who may share a name. We've also considered that it just makes sense to use different nicknames should we participate in websites, forums, and chats outside of Pottermore.
Someone is using my nickname. Can't you do something?
Truth be told, there's no way for us to enforce the "No Repeats" rule outside of not including them on The List. We suggest offering them a link to our List so they can settle on a new name of their own, but they may choose not to do so. It's understandable to feel frustrated should they prove to be nonreceptive, but please refrain from throwing vitriol and abuse. We want Pottermore and related sites to be as friendly as an environment as possible, so try to remain polite and courteous at all times.
